When summer vacation rolls around, you start wanting to head somewhere fun, right? One of the most popular leisure destinations is Tokyo Disney Resort! But summer at Tokyo Disney Resort is seriously hot. Without solid heat-prevention measures and a good plan, the heat can cut into how much fun you have — and even increase the risk of heatstroke.

So this time, I’ll thoroughly explain how to enjoy Tokyo Disneyland in summer. I’ll introduce summer-only content as well as efficient ways to get around so you can survive the heat and still have fun, so please take a look.

What’s Summer at Tokyo Disneyland Like?

Outdoors, it’s just plain hot. In direct sunlight, it gets so hot it feels suffocating. Some areas have little shade — especially during park-opening waits or attraction queues — leaving no escape and making it tough both mentally and physically.

Indoors, on the other hand, it’s cool and comfortable, but the temperature gap with the outside is huge. After cooling off inside, suddenly spending long stretches outdoors can make some people feel unwell.

That said, although summer at the park is a tough environment, with proper heat-prevention measures and a thoughtful touring strategy, you can minimize the heat and still enjoy your day! For heat-prevention measures, see the article below.

The park also offers plenty of summer-only content — water-themed parades and chilled menu items — which is one of the unique attractions you can only enjoy this season.

Introducing Tokyo Disneyland’s Summer-Only Content

Here, I’ll introduce the water-themed parades and chilled menu items prepared for summer at Tokyo Disneyland. Just by knowing about these, you can enjoy Disneyland’s “summer” to the fullest!

[Parade] Baymax’s Mission: Cool Down

Baymax-themed floats parade along the route while spraying water. The water sprays in time with the music, creating a music-festival-like atmosphere that really gets the crowd going! Under the blazing sun, getting splashed feels amazing. Some people worry about their clothes getting wet, but if the weather is nice, they dry quickly.

Summer parades can be cancelled when temperatures get too high, but since this parade doesn’t have dancers, it generally won’t be cancelled unless the weather is truly terrible — another big plus!

[Attraction] Splash Mountain “More! Soaked MAX”

The popular attraction Splash Mountain gets a summer-only spec where you get soaked even more than usual when plunging into the waterfall. The rush of falling through the air plus getting drenched feels great — truly an attraction made for summer!

Normally, the rear seats sometimes stay a bit drier, but with this spec, even the rear seats get thoroughly soaked, so don’t forget to bring a towel!

[Recommended for kids] Soaking spots / Toontown, Adventureland

During summer, soaking spots are set up in Toontown and Adventureland. In Toontown, it’s in front of Roger Rabbit’s Car Toon Spin; in Adventureland, it’s in front of the gate marked “ADVENTURE LAND.” From a distance the water looks like a fine mist, but up close it sprays with the force of a shower bath. Plus, water pours down from above, soaking you in an instant. Since there’s no waiting time, it’s especially recommended for families with kids!

Personally, I recommend Toontown’s spot — it’s larger in scale and located next to the baby center and restrooms.

However, if you play here, assume you’ll get drenched all the way through to your underwear, so always bring a change of clothes! If you forget, shops sell clothes, so I recommend buying ahead of time (otherwise you’ll be walking around the park and shops soaking wet — yikes!).

[Food] Chilled menu items

At several locations around the park, shaved ice is sold as a summer-only menu item. The flavors differ by location, so you could try one in the morning and another in the afternoon, or share with your companions by ordering different flavors.

My top recommendation is the Shaved Ice Sundae served at Ice Cream Cones — soft-serve on top of shaved ice. It looks great and tastes great, so please give it a try.

Efficient Touring Tips for Enjoying Summer Tokyo Disneyland Comfortably

Here, I’ll introduce ways to tour the hot park as comfortably and efficiently as possible! Crowding levels vary, but please use this as a reference for planning your visit.

For enjoying “summer content,” a later entry time is recommended

As mentioned earlier, the summer park is just plain hot. Standing in crowds under the blazing sun for long stretches outdoors is hard both physically and mentally. The first thing you face on arrival is the “park-opening wait” — no roof and packed with people, which is very stressful. For that reason, I recommend entering at a later time when there’s no opening wait!

The reason is that when it comes to enjoying summer content, how early you enter doesn’t really matter much. The advantage of entering early is that you can buy Priority Pass or Disney Premier Access (DPA) — but among the summer content, only Splash Mountain is eligible for these passes.

For “Baymax’s Mission: Cool Down” too, hardly anyone waits for long stretches in the heat, so even if you arrive just before, you can usually still get a fairly good viewing spot.

The recommended entry times are around 10:00 for the One-Day Passport, and for other passport types I recommend the Early Evening Passport that lets you enter from 15:00. With the Early Evening Passport, you can just make it in time for the last performance of Baymax’s Mission: Cool Down, so you can still enjoy summer content! (Parade schedules may change daily, so please check the schedule in advance.)

Cool down with indoor attractions as you go

Next, here’s a way to tour the hot park as comfortably as possible: alternate outdoor and indoor attractions to cool off at appropriate intervals. For example, after queuing for Dumbo the Flying Elephant (outdoor), cool off by enjoying Mickey’s PhilharMagic (indoor). After queuing for Big Thunder Mountain (outdoor), cool off at Country Bear Theater (indoor). Touring this way lets you efficiently enjoy attractions while escaping the heat.

Below are some recommended indoor attractions. These have relatively short wait times and long indoor experiences, making them perfect for cooling off. Be sure to give them a try.

Recommended indoor attractions
  • “it’s a small world” / Fantasyland
  • Mickey’s PhilharMagic / Fantasyland
  • Cinderella’s Fairy Tale Hall / Fantasyland
  • The Enchanted Tiki Room: Stitch Presents “Aloha E Komo Mai!” / Adventureland
  • Pirates of the Caribbean / Adventureland
  • Country Bear Theater / Westernland
  • Stitch Encounter / Tomorrowland

Most of these indoor attractions can be experienced even by small children, making them very kid-friendly. I took my child to the Tiki Room, and she was so taken with it that she kept singing “Aloha E Komo Mai!” even after we got home!

Also, part of Country Bear Theater is opened up as a rest area, so it’s also handy when you want to sit down and pass some time!

Enjoy outdoor attractions from evening onward

One way to beat the heat is to enjoy outdoor attractions from evening after sunset. The temperature may still be high, but with no direct sunlight, the burning heat is gone and it’s relatively easier to spend time outside. The attractions below tend to have long wait times and are popular ones with outdoor queues, so consider doing them in the evening.

Outdoor attractions with long wait times
  • Pooh’s Hunny Hunt / Fantasyland
  • Beauty and the Beast “Enchanted Tale” / Fantasyland
  • Dumbo the Flying Elephant / Fantasyland
  • Splash Mountain / Critter Country
  • Big Thunder Mountain / Westernland
  • Baymax’s Happy Ride / Tomorrowland

One thing to keep in mind for evening: there’s the Castle Show “Reach for the Stars” and the parade “Electrical Parade.” If you’re going to watch those and have dinner too, you may not have much extra time. Especially during peak crowds, attractions can stop accepting standby queues earlier than usual (a “line cut”), so be careful.

For those who are fine skipping the shows and parades, going to attractions during this time can actually mean shorter waits — recommended.

Use Mobile Order to cut wait times

Some restaurants in the park accept Mobile Order. Since some restaurants have outdoor waiting lines, use Mobile Order as much as possible at the eligible restaurants!

Summary

How did you like it? This time I introduced how to enjoy Tokyo Disneyland in summer and how to tour efficiently. Summer at Disneyland is very hot, but it’s packed with summer-only content that will surely become great memories! And by touring efficiently, you can minimize the heat and still enjoy yourself. I hope this article contributes even a little to your wonderful summer memories.
