Restaurant Hokusai ‘Osusume-Ryori’ Review: Premium Japanese Set at Tokyo Disneyland (Fall 2025-)

レストラン北齋 おすすめ料理2025冬~

Restaurant Hokusai is the only Japanese restaurant at Tokyo Disneyland. Standing apart from the park’s predominantly Western atmosphere, it serves classic Japanese set meals featuring dishes like tonkatsu, tempura, and chirashi-zushi.

This time we’re reviewing “Osusume-Ryori (Chef’s Recommendation),” a limited-time menu offered for Fall/Winter 2025. With small portions of sukiyaki, tempura, and other main dishes all packed onto one tray, it’s like a luxurious “grown-up’s kids’ plate” — a deluxe Japanese set meal!

Restaurant Hokusai sits in the World Bazaar area of Tokyo Disneyland. The dining room is on the 2nd floor, with only the entrance on the 1st floor — it’s easy to miss, so some park-goers may not even realize there’s a Japanese restaurant here.

Restaurant Hokusai operates with Priority Seating, so reservations through the official booking site are recommended. You can sometimes get a table by waiting in line as a walk-in, so if you weren’t able to reserve, try asking a cast member when you arrive.

The “Osusume-Ryori” set we’re reviewing today consists of six dishes in total: a lightly poached appetizer, tempura and sukiyaki as the mains, chirashi sushi as the rice course, miso soup, and mizu-manju for dessert — a truly luxurious Japanese spread.

Tempura sets are part of the regular menu too, but the sukiyaki and lightly poached seafood are exclusive to this menu. If you love Japanese food and want to sample a variety of dishes in small portions, this is the set to go for! At 3,800 yen it isn’t exactly cheap, but the lineup feels well worth the price.

The fact that it’s available for more than half a year — from October 2025 through the end of June 2026 — also means many more guests get the chance to try it!

Restaurant Hokusai “Osusume-Ryori” — Full Review

From here, we’ll walk through each dish in the Osusume-Ryori set in detail.

Overall, every single dish was genuinely delicious — a truly indulgent spread! It’s like someone gathered all the most prized Japanese dishes onto one tray: the perfect “grown-up’s kids’ plate.”

As for portions, it looks like a lot at first glance, but the volume is roughly equivalent to a standard single serving. If you’re a big eater, it may feel slightly light — in which case you can add a small udon for an extra 400 yen, so consider it as an option.

Personally, I felt 3,800 yen for this menu offers excellent value for money.

Osusume-Ryori menu detail

Lightly Poached Kinmedai and Scallop

First up is the appetizer-style “lightly poached kinmedai (golden eye snapper) and scallop.” “Yubiki” refers to ingredients briefly dipped in boiling water, but in this dish both the appearance and flavor were nearly identical to sashimi.

A sauce is already drizzled on top — a thick, jelly-like sauce. It tastes close to soy sauce, but there’s clearly more to it than just soy.

Because it’s poached, the dish has a refreshing quality and there’s no fishy aftertaste from either the snapper or the scallop — both were delicious!

Tempura Assortment

The tempura assortment includes four items: shrimp, kisu (whiting), kabocha squash, and zucchini. Every piece has a satisfyingly crispy coating! The shrimp is large and substantial. This was actually my first time eating zucchini tempura — it tastes almost identical to eggplant! Every piece was delicious.

It comes with both tempura dipping sauce and salt, so you can enjoy each piece exactly how you like!

Japanese Black Wagyu Sukiyaki with Egg Sauce

This sukiyaki is packed with hearty cuts of Japanese black wagyu beef. Speaking personally, when the dish arrived I assumed there’d be a modest amount of beef based on what I could see — but there was easily twice as much hiding underneath. When I lifted a slice with my chopsticks, I was amazed by how large each piece was! The beef being wagyu, it was tender and incredibly tasty.

The beef is topped with a small amount of sauce resembling egg yolk. Since the menu calls it “egg sauce,” it likely isn’t yolk alone.

For vegetables, the dish includes shimeji mushrooms, shirataki noodles, and leafy greens (spinach perhaps? — definitely not shungiku).

Snow Crab and Salmon Roe Chirashi Sushi

The rice course isn’t plain white rice — it’s a luxurious chirashi sushi! The red of the snow crab and ikura (salmon roe) alongside the yellow of the shredded egg garnish makes for a vivid, appetizing presentation.

The toppings aren’t overflowing, but the portion sits just right alongside the other dishes. Both the ikura and crab come through clearly in flavor — really delicious!

Apple Mizu-Manju (Water Dumpling)

Finally, dessert: the “apple mizu-manju.” The outer dough is apple-flavored, with custard cream inside. The jelly-like, mochi-like dough is pleasantly easy to bite through and very easy to eat. The apple flavor came through more strongly than expected — really tasty. The custard cream inside isn’t overly sweet and pairs perfectly with the outer dough!

Because of the chewy texture, take care when serving it to very young children — but since it’s relatively easy to bite, kids around 4 or 5 should be able to enjoy it.

A matcha cream is served alongside it. Personally, I felt it was tastier eaten on its own rather than with the mizu-manju.
