Vulcania Restaurant is the only Chinese restaurant at Tokyo DisneySea. It’s a popular spot with many authentic Chinese menu items. One of its spring-and-summer seasonal specialties is the “Chilled Dan Dan Noodles.”
When summer comes and temperatures rise, you start craving cold, refreshing food. This time, I’ll write a detailed review of one of Disney’s summer chilled menu items, the “Chilled Dan Dan Noodles.” This menu is actually also a great choice for families with children — I’ll explain why in detail, so please read on.

Detailed Report on the Chilled Dan Dan Noodles
From here, I’ll give a thorough report on the Chilled Dan Dan Noodles. First, here’s the overall look: the soup is a “shrimp-based broth.” On top are the dan dan noodles’ signature “meat miso,” shrimp to match the shrimp broth, plus squid, simmered egg, zha cai (pickled mustard stems), and vegetables — a generous mix of toppings. The pale color tone makes the dish look refreshing at first glance. As for the spiciness that’s always a concern with dan dan noodles, you can adjust it to your taste using the chili oil that comes with it.

Adjustable spiciness — a relief for families with kids!
From here, I’ll explain why this menu is kid-friendly.
Vulcania Restaurant has a children’s menu called the “Kids’ Set,” but the main dish in that set is fried rice. Kids love “slurpy” noodle dishes, don’t they? Until now, however, Vulcania Restaurant had only one noodle dish on offer, and it was on the spicy side — often something kids couldn’t eat.
子供I don’t want fried rice! I want noodles!
chakoHmm… I guess we’ll have to go to a different restaurant then…
These exchanges happened constantly, and even though we adults wanted to go to Vulcania Restaurant, we’d reluctantly give up.
The “Chilled Dan Dan Noodles” solves that frustration! Without the chili oil, this dan dan noodle dish has no spiciness at all, so even small children can eat it (I confirmed with a cast member that it isn’t spicy). After dividing up portions, adults can add chili oil to their own to taste — so both kids and adults can finally get their long-awaited “slurp”!
The fact that you can adjust the spiciness may not sound like a big deal, but as a parent it was a menu item I could have cried tears of joy over! I really hope this approach is used for future menus as well!
Time to taste! Rich yet refreshing — exquisite dan dan noodles!
Now for the actual tasting report.
First, I tried it without chili oil, with zero spiciness. The shrimp flavor came through strongly, and the rich broth was very delicious. Maybe because there’s no heat, it felt less like Chinese food and more like a slightly Western-style “shrimp bisque.” The broth has a nice thickness that clings well to the noodles — delicious!
Next, I tried adding the chili oil — and the moment I did, the flavor immediately turned into proper dan dan noodles! The shift in taste before and after adding the chili oil was so dramatic it almost felt like a different dish. Since the shrimp flavor of the broth comes through more clearly without chili oil, I’d recommend using it as a flavor-change accent. Be sure to compare before and after! You can adjust the chili oil to your preferred level of heat, though I felt the spiciness was milder than your average chili oil.
The broth itself is rich whether or not you add chili oil, but since it’s cold, it eats refreshingly. Most of the toppings are also on the lighter side, so I think it works well even on hot days or when you have summer fatigue. Highly recommended.
If the heat isn’t enough for you…
For those who love spicy food, even adding all of the chili oil might leave you wanting more. In that case, I recommend adding either the “Spicy Harissa Sauce” or the “Black Mala Sauce” on top. This will add a sharp kick of heat and bring even more satisfaction.
Summary
How did you like it? The “Chilled Dan Dan Noodles” at Tokyo DisneySea’s Vulcania Restaurant is a rich-yet-refreshing chilled menu item that’s perfect for hot days. Because the spiciness can be adjusted and even small children can eat it together with the adults, it’s also a great pick for families who’d given up on visiting before. If you’re curious, please give it a try.
